Lake Ecology

Lake Management:
Our Lake Management is currently done by Aquatic Analysts.  They are located in Middleville, NJ.  We’ve had a long history with them, and we feel it is to our advantage to maintain this relationship.
Larry Kovar and his group will be on the lake in their airboat every couple of weeks checking things out.  Remember, they are the only allowed power boat.  When needed, he lets me know if we have a ‘problem’ spot.  I will post signs at the entrance and both beaches that we have a possible treatment coming up.  He then comes out, reassesses and treats if necessary and he will post official signs at those spots.  Realize, that just because the airboat is on the lake, it does not mean we are being treated.
We will continue to try to balance the many uses of the lake. Currently, the fisheries are thriving in the upcoming weeds and algae.  The algae that is in the lake now, is ‘good algae’.  We will hold on treatments while we wait and see how the lake is going to fair.  Mother Nature at work right now; we’ll let her do her thing.  If you are ever concerned, please call the office.  This committee, the beach committee and the office staff work closely together with Aquatic Analysts to try to ensure a healthy lake.

The treatments generally are herbicides.  There is usually a 5 day irrigation restriction.  Please be aware of this if you use the lake to water your plants.
Information sheets on what is being used is available at the office.

In addition, if anyone is fertilizing their lawns, please use “lake friendly” fertilizers.  There are a number of places these can be purchased.  It would be truly beneficial to the lake.

Geese Control:
Space Wildlife will be here to help control resident geese.  We’ve had limited success in the past year in capturing any of the geese.  However, we decided to renew our permit and continue to try to control these nuisance birds.
Remember...harassment, harassment, harassment.
We also can control the goose eggs but the nests can be difficult to find.  If anyone is aware of an active nest, please call me.  If it is on your property, please give us permission to access the nests.  The permit does not allow for non-appointed persons to do any goose control.  Eric Space is here to help us.  And, don’t forget, our federal permit for goose control specifically prohibits feeding geese.  If caught, we would lose our permit this year and for future years.

Boating:

Thus far, Crandon Lake has been very lucky in avoiding many of the non-native invasive species of weed that have overtaken many of our neighboring lakes (like milfoil).  I believe this is in part to our limited boat access.  But for those of you with boats that go to other bodies of water please remember to clean your boat before bringing it onto our lake.  Take those extra few minutes and hose off your motor and boat before bringing it down to the lake.  It takes only a few seeds carried from another lake to seed ours with those pesky plants.

Looking forward to the 2008 summer season.
See you on the lake!
